In my presentations on young adult writing I describe the time of young adulthood as pure time. This is the time before career selection, wedding arrangements, family planning, separate or joint checking accounts, amount of life insurance, last will and testaments, tax deferred savings accounts, mountains or the sea shore, IPO's, IRA's, or retirement communities. This is a time of life when wonder was beginning, but nothing really mattered except scaring the living crap out of your friends or getting that girl to smile at you. This is the time of life that R.J. Burroughs describes so well in The Boys of '58.Burroughs recounts the shenanigans of five boys in small town Oklahoma. He is a master with the dialogue. The reader doesn't even have to wait for the punch lines to laugh as each entire story is told in such a humorous manner. If you are looking for some old fashion belly laughs from a simpler time, I highly suggest reading this book.

The Boys of '58 edition by RJ Burroughs Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The Boys of 58 take me back and make me laugh to tears sometimes at all the dumb stuff that boys do at that age! I leave the book out and pick it up to read whenever I need a pick-me-up and it never lets me down. I have read the book twice and enjoyed it as much if not more the 2nd time around. I'm a 62 y/o male and highly recommend this book for reading of all ages. You're in for a treat. I have the book on my kindle and paperback.
The Boys of 58 is not a terrible book. I enjoyed reading it.
My major issue with this book is the narrative arc. This is a collection of short stories not a novel about a group of friends. That itself isn't a problem. There's nothing wrong with a short story collection. I'm currently reading When the Hero Comes Home and that's a collection of stories around the same theme. I, Robot is a collection of stories set in the same universe. My issue here is that this is a collection of short stories, featuring the same character, in the same continuity, told sequentially, and yet it never feels like there's any progression. You could shuffle the chapters like a deck of cards and the book would come out the same way. I still wanted something to end the book. Maybe a big prank or a somewhat meaningful event and while there is a prank that breaks the friendship and there is an event that changes Sonny's perspective on life. They're shuffled into the deck of stories like any other. In the end we don't get anything to close out the narrative. We barely learn that school is coming around the corner and then you're reading an epilogue which is just like any chapter except for the closing paragraph which hints towards a future.
When the second story involved the kids telling a girls father that they're not sure which one of them is the father to the baby, that she isn't having. It was the first sign that I didn't really like these boys. Even with the veneer of the 1958 setting I feel like these were the sort of kids who do things without thinking of the consequences. That sort of innocence is supposed to be charming but I never really liked it in them as I have in films like The Sandlot.
While as a group I wasn't fond of the characters individually it's tough to name one I disliked more than Sonny the protagonist. Odd because his perspective should have given me a greater appreciation for his intent. It didn't. However his perspective did put me in a position where I like the other kids more oddly enough. Insofar as I could tell them apart I believe I liked Eddie, but there wasn't a lot of emphasis on identifying the characters as characters.
The narrative style is quick very quick. You could read a story a day and have yourself a very nice little month. It's very episodic in that manner. It's told in a first person perspective and it feels like you're hearing the story told by a child. As a grown man I do credit the author with convincingly creating his world and the voice of his character. Those were excellently done.
It's a bit disingenuous to say that the bad outweighs the good in spite of what my two star review might suggest. The pranks and adventures were good and fun. The characters were middling and the overall was disappointing, but if you're looking for something to evoke a nostalgic past this does that.
The Boys of 58 took me back to my childhood. It was exciting, funny and kept me reading. I'm looking forward to reading the boys of 59.
Will definitely put a smile on your face. Great for all ages. Each chapter is a new story so it's perfect to have on hand to read in a waiting room or when you have a few spare minutes. I read it between classes in college; so beware if you are in a quite reception/study area you may need to laugh out loud!
Having grown up around the area I was thrilled to relive through the eyes of Sonny, my childhood haunts. I have always wondered why young boys do what they do and now I have a better understanding and a lot of laughs. I would highly recommend this to young and old.
This is a hilarious book! Not only is it funny but it also shows how different kids entertained themselves in the yr 1958 verses how they are entertained in todays world. I highly recommend to read this book especially if you are having a bad day, because I guarantee it will put a smile on your face! -))))
As an immigrant this fun book opened a window to a side of America I've never experienced. Great stories to share with the whole family
